Apple Tree staff member and outdoor educator Kendra McGuire leads Nature Discovery sessions with all age groups. Apple Tree is fortunate to be situated on the Stowe recreation path, and just beyond are streams, fields and forest to discover. Kendra joins each class to venture beyond our playgrounds and into the natural backyard. Every other week they explore a natural space and learn together, following student interest. Children will have opportunities to learn about local plants, animals and get plenty of exercise outdoors. The environment is a natural playground and children are encouraged to investigate this world through play. Teachers guide learning through songs, stories, and games to spark curiosity.
Infants are encouraged to explore by crawling on the ground, touching and grasping natural materials. Students ride in wagons or strollers or are assisted in walking by teachers as they journey down the recreation path into nearby fields and paths. As toddlers begin to walk, run and climb they are supported in playing outdoors. Moving over uneven terrain in a variety of climates builds their fine and gross motor skills during play. Our students and teachers enjoy exploring together, while building their independence and confidence outdoors.
